There's a common practice among some clients seeking design services to ask for a glass of milk with a promise to buy the cow. Known as asking for work on speculation, or "spec work," it occurs when a client expects a designer to work up a concept before the client actually contracts the designer for services. "Show me an idea for a logo, and if I like it, I'll buy it." Imagine asking a contractor to add a room to your house, and if you like it when he's finished, then you'll pay him! That's asinine, and yet, it's expected of designers all the time. Use the designer's portfolio to gauge their work; if it doesn't grab you, keep looking.
Some say doing spec work is the same as prostituting your profession, but think about it: Prostitutes get paid. Designers who do spec are just sluts who are putting out in the hopes of landing a great deal. Just try to establish yourself as a pro after you've earned a reputation for being cheap, easy, and desperate. Quality clients who are looking for class will keep on looking. Don't be a slut. Say no to spec!
